How much does a plumber cost in Edinburgh?
Almost nobody in this trade publishes their rate, which is why this question gets asked so often. Here is ours, plainly, along with what "no call-out fee" actually means in practice.
Short answer
We charge £70 + VAT an hour, with a one hour minimum on all jobs, plus the cost of materials. There is no call-out fee, so you are not paying for us to arrive.
What the one hour minimum means
If a job takes fifteen minutes, you pay for one hour. That is standard across the trade and it exists because getting an engineer, a van and a stocked toolkit to your door has a fixed cost regardless of how long the tap takes.
What it also means is that if you have three small jobs, get them done in one visit. Two loose taps and a running toilet inside the same hour cost the same as one loose tap.
No call-out fee, and why that matters
Plenty of firms charge a call-out fee on top of the hourly rate, so an hour of work can arrive as two separate numbers on the invoice. We do not do that. You pay for the time worked and the materials used.
Where you should be careful is the difference between "free call-out" and "free quote". Some firms will not charge to come and look at a job they might win, but will charge to come and diagnose one. Ask which you are getting.
How our rate compares in Edinburgh
Google currently puts the Edinburgh range at roughly £40 to £90 an hour for standard work. We are not the cheapest in that range and we are not trying to be.
What you get for it is Gas Safe registered engineers rather than a general handyman, full public liability insurance, and the same team on plumbing that does the gas work. That last one matters more than it sounds: a fair share of plumbing calls turn into heating calls halfway through, and we do not have to hand you to someone else at that point.
When we work, and when we do not
Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm. We do not run a 24-hour emergency service, and we would rather say that here than have you ring at midnight and get nobody. If you need genuine out-of-hours cover, use a firm that actually staffs it.
Inside those hours we will tell you honestly whether something needs doing today or whether it can safely wait until we are next passing.
