How much does a new boiler cost in Edinburgh?
Most people asking this have had one quote and no idea whether it is fair. Here are our actual prices, what sits behind each one, and the things that push a boiler job up in an Edinburgh house specifically.
Short answer
Our boiler installations start at £1,750 + VAT for a straight combi swap, £2,300 + VAT for our most popular upgrade and £3,000 + VAT for a premium install. The final figure is confirmed after a free survey.
What you get at each price
At £1,750 + VAT you get a straight like-for-like combi swap: an A-rated Ideal i Mini, standard flue and controls, and a 5-year warranty. This is the option when the existing boiler is in a sensible place and nothing else needs moving.
At £2,300 + VAT, our most popular, you get an Ideal Logic Max, a power flush of the system, a magnetic filter fitted, a smart wireless thermostat and a 10-year warranty. The power flush matters more than people expect, which is covered further down.
At £3,000 + VAT you get a premium Ideal boiler, the same power flush and filter, top-end wireless heating controls and up to a 12-year warranty.
All three are guide prices, not quotes. Finance is available on request.
What pushes the price up in an Edinburgh house
Moving the boiler. Taking a boiler out of a bedroom cupboard and putting it in the kitchen means new gas, water and flue runs, and that is the single biggest jump in price.
Changing system type. Going from an old regular boiler with a tank in the loft to a combi means removing the cylinder and tanks and reworking the pipework. It is a bigger job than a swap and it is priced as one.
Tenement flats. Flue routing is the usual problem. Where the flue can legally terminate is dictated by windows, boundaries and what the rest of the building has agreed to, and that sometimes decides which boiler can go in at all.
The state of the existing system. Twenty years of sludge does not disappear because the boiler is new. If a system needs flushing properly, it needs flushing properly.
Why the warranty depends on who fits it
The length of warranty you get is not a property of the boiler. It depends on whether the installer is accredited by the manufacturer. The same boiler fitted by an unaccredited installer can carry a fraction of the cover.
We are accredited Ideal installers, which is why we can register warranties of up to 12 years directly with Ideal on the day. It is also why we only fit Ideal. If you want another brand we will say so rather than fit something we cannot stand behind.
Whatever you get quoted, ask who registers the warranty and for how long. It is the question that separates two otherwise identical prices.
Servicing, and keeping the warranty alive
Most manufacturer warranties require an annual service to stay valid, which is worth knowing before you skip one. A full Gas Safe service with us is £60 + VAT.
Not every failing boiler needs replacing either. Plenty of the calls we get turn out to be a pressure loss, a failed diverter valve or a sludged system rather than a boiler at the end of its life. We will tell you which it is, including when the answer costs us the bigger job.
