What a new boiler costs, in plain numbers
Most firms make you book a visit before they will breathe a number. Ours are published: a straight like-for-like combi swap starts at £1,750 + VAT with an A-rated Ideal i Mini and a 5-year warranty. Our most popular install is £2,300 + VAT for an Ideal Logic Max with a power flush, magnetic filter, smart wireless thermostat and a 10-year warranty. A premium install with top-end controls and up to a 12-year warranty starts at £3,000 + VAT.
Those are guide prices, confirmed after a free survey with no obligation. What we will not do is quote you one number on the phone and a different one in your hallway.
How the install actually goes
First a free survey: we count radiators, check your bathrooms and measure the incoming mains flow, because a combi cannot deliver more water than your mains supplies no matter what the brochure says. You get a fixed written quote from that, not an estimate.
Install day is usually one day for a straight swap. Moving the boiler, changing system type or awkward flue runs can stretch it to four, and we tell you which you are before we start. We register your warranty with Ideal on the day, so the cover exists in your name before the van leaves the street.
We drain down, protect floors and carpets, take the old boiler away and leave the system balanced and the controls explained. If anything about your pipework worries us once the old boiler is off the wall, you hear it straight away with options, not a surprise invoice.
Tenements, flats and older Edinburgh homes
A lot of our work is in tenement flats and pre-war houses, and they come with their own rules. Flue routing is the usual one: where a flue can legally terminate depends on windows, boundaries and the neighbours below and above, and in some closes that decides which boilers are even possible. Solid walls, long pipe runs, and original pipework in poor condition are the other usual suspects.
None of that is a problem, it is just Edinburgh. But it is why we survey properly instead of quoting blind, and why a quote from a firm that has not seen the flat is worth very little.
Repairs and servicing, not just installs
Plenty of boilers we get called to do not need replacing. Pressure loss, a failed diverter valve or a sludged system are all repairable at our standard rate of £70 + VAT an hour, and we will tell you when a repair is the right answer even though the install is the bigger job for us.
An annual service is £70 + VAT, keeps the boiler safe and efficient, and most manufacturer warranties require one to stay valid, including the long Ideal warranties we register for you.
